I suck at chemistry (first post, sulfur)

and I want to learn, for realz, I want to not suck no more in a few months or years

but what about sulfur?
Get it elemental, under rocks and stuff, near volcanoes too, it’s plentiful

It forms funky cyclic octa-molecules S8. It’s bright yellow & crystalline
Solid sulphur crystal

Today we get most of sulfur from exhausted SO2, and purification of petroleum & natural gas that gives H2S

Both SO2 and H2S can give sulfur in an organic solvent, monoethanolamine (MEA)

Why u need sulfur tho?

What you want to make is sulfuric acid.
H2SO4

Sulfuric acid makes phosphoric acid for fertilizers. Mind you that fertilizers are a huge deal. Something I hadn’t realized before studying chemistry.

Sulfuric acid is also making Hydrogen, in a sulfur-iodine cycle

and it’s used a lot in steelmaking, to clean metal sheets from rust

it’s the acid catalyst we use for caprolactam → nylon, hydrochloric acid, petroleum derivatives, and much more

it can unblock your pipes, hydrolysing fats

finally, it’s the electrolyte for lead-acid batteries in cars
